A sustainable future ahead of us as Turkish Airlines signs a declaration to continue the development of SAF

Since this year (February 2, to be exact), Turkish Airlines started using SAF on board its flights and since then has championed the fuel for its importance in the aviation industry. Starting with the Istanbul-Paris route, the airline then progressed to incorporating sustainable fuel into more routes, such as its routes to London, Oslo and Gothenburg once a week.

Today, Turkey signed the declaration which brings together organizations from different sectors to devote their time and efforts to the decarbonization of sustainable aviation fuel. Turkish Airlines Chief Investment and Technology Officer Levent Konukçu had this to say about the significance of this statement:

“Dramatically reducing its emissions with the inclusion of next-generation aircraft in its fleet, operational optimizations and top-tier fuel-saving applications, Turkish Airlines will continue its support and investment in sustainable aviation fuels. .”

Global Airlines, the umbrella under which Turkish Airlines falls, plans to incorporate SAF into more routes provided by their airlines, as the fuel would reduce carbon emissions by 87% compared to the fuel currently used. In addition to this statement, Turkish Airlines is also in collaboration with universities that dedicate their facilities to the research and development of SAF.

The Microalgae-Based Sustainable Bio-Jet Fuel (MICRO-JET) project is a currently ongoing project in which Turkish Airlines has partnered with Boğaziçi University to conduct significant research (with assistance and funding from the Türkiye Scientific and Technological Research Institute). By reaching a conclusion, the airline hopes to help revolutionize the aviation industry by helping to produce results that could bring us closer to carbon-free air travel.
