Travel guide for the Great National Day 2022

TOMORROW marks the start of the Grand National Festival 2022 with many ready to attend Aintree Racecourse for three days.

The famous Randox Garden National is one of the most popular racing events on the Merseyside calendar, especially as this year is welcoming spectators for the first time in two years.

Racegoers were urged to plan their trips and use public transport whenever possible.

Merseyrail has shared its race day timetable and reassured participants that there will be a 10-minute train service to and from Aintree to Liverpool city centre.

Trains to and from Aintrée

At Thursday 7 and Friday 8 Aprila 10-minute service will run between Aintree and Liverpool Central and Moorfields stations at the following times:

  • From 10:30 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. approximately before the races
  • From 4:45 p.m. to 8:25 p.m. approximately after the races

At saturday april 9a 10-minute service will run between Aintree and Liverpool Central and Moorfields stations at the following times:

  • From 10:30 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. approximately before the races
  • From 5:35 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. approximately after the races

Buy your tickets in advance at any staffed Merseyrail station or buy a Online Day Saver and avoid queues.

There will be entertainment at Aintree station to welcome our passengers on the run and we will be offering the famous Merseyrail flip flops to anyone with sore feet!

Wirral Line Travel Information

There are no changes to Wirral’s timings during the three days of the Grand National Festival but IIf you are traveling from one of our Wirral line stations at the races, we recommend that you change trains for Aintree station at Moorfields station.

Schedule changes for the Ormskirk line

  • trains from Ormskirk to Liverpool will leave up to two minutes earlier than usual during the three days of the Grand National Festival.

Kirkby line timetable changes

  • Trains between Kirkby and Liverpool city center will be finish at Sandhillswhere passengers can board another service to complete their journey.
  • This will apply to all services between 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
  • Kirkby line passengers traveling to Liverpool should get off at Sandhills and board any train to Liverpool.
  • Passengers traveling to Kirkbyshould board any train to Southport or Ormskirk from Liverpool Central or Moorfields and change at Sandhills for trains to Kirkby

Southport line timetable changes

  • trains from Southport to Liverpool will leave up to two minutes earlier than usual during the three days of the Grand National Festival.
