Singapore Merlion turns 50! Here’s how the country celebrates him

Singapore’s Merlion has been a plot point for years now, attracting tourists and making it a must-visit (and fun photo click) for those visiting the country. As the statue turns 50 on September 15, the Singapore Tourism Board has planned several activities to celebrate the mythical creature’s Golden Jubilee in style. We have all the details! Since its installation in 1972, the Merlion Statue has been a much-loved structure in Singapore. The national icon has a long history and over the years has become a well-known and beloved symbol of tourism. If you’re good at math, you’ll know that the iconic structure, beautiful public art, will celebrate its 50th anniversary tomorrow, September 15. To bring the same, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has several activities planned.

Merlion Golden Jubilee: Everything you need to know

To celebrate the structure’s longevity and continued popularity, the STB is set to host a month-long party, which will attract tourists as well as locals and boost the economy. The party in Singapore is expected to include limited-edition Merlion-themed food and drink, treats, retail merchandise and more.

According Straits time, the statue will be illuminated with a golden hue from September 15 to 29, from 6:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m., to mark its golden jubilee. That’s not all – the statue will continue to be lit throughout the Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore 2022 Grand Prix, which runs from September 30 to October 2, 2022, the report adds. This will provide spectacular views, as tourists are expected to flock to the statue to catch a glimpse of it and capture the beauty on camera.

According asia one, people can download the Visit Singapore Travel Guide app and follow the Merli-Go-Round x Merlion 50 guide, so they can meet the six official Merlions in the country. Upon completion of all quests in these Merlions, participants will be able to redeem a limited-edition Merli wrist rest plush (while supplies last), the report adds. This event will run until September 30, 2022.

That’s not all – the STB has launched several F&B projects to celebrate Merlion’s anniversary, including special themed drinks that will be available at Marina Bay Sands. Additionally, you will also be able to purchase and play Let’s Go, a children’s board game featuring Merli and attractions around Singapore.
