LIST: The best and worst places to refuel in Texas for a Thanksgiving trip

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Drivers fueling up before hitting the road this Thanksgiving could save a few bucks.

On Monday, the cheapest gas averages in the state were in South Texas.

According to a AAA report, the national average for a gallon of unleaded gasoline fell 11 cents last week to $3.66.

The state of Texas ranks #1 among the 10 cheapest markets with average prices of $2.99; followed by Georgia ($3.10), Mississippi ($3.12), Arkansas ($3.13), Louisiana ($3.17), Oklahoma ($3.18 ), Tennessee ($3.20), Alabama ($3.22), South Carolina ($3.22), and Missouri ($3.24), the AAA reported.

In Cameron County, Los Fresnos resident Daniel Sanchez told ValleyCentral he paid $2.55 for a gallon at Circle K near Highway 100.

“I’m always looking for the best gas prices,” Sanchez said. “And for a while, it’s been, at this Circle K here in Los Fresnos, the only place for probably a month, a month and a half, with the lowest gas prices, the best prices.”

He said it had been his favorite haunt for six months. Sanchez told ValleyCentral he uses EZ pay, a card that works like a debit card, to help him get 10 cents off gas.

Between Brownsville and Harlingen, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded was $2.82 on Monday. That’s 17 cents cheaper than the average for the same gallon a year ago.

How are prices moving in Texas?

Prices have been on a downward trend since the summer, when the highest average price recorded for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $4.69 in June. This week, gasoline prices in Texas are at about the same averages drivers would have found a year ago, with the current average only a few cents cheaper than the 3, $01 in 2021.

In Texas, however, prices indicate that those traveling to North and West Texas are likely to find some of the highest prices in the state. Terrell County holds the highest average for a gallon of gasoline at $3.89 on Monday.

South Texas counties have the lowest prices, with Hidalgo County being the cheapest at $2.79 on Monday.
