Lipsi, a small Greek island in the Dodecanese archipelago, ranks among the world’s top 10 alternative travel destinations for 2022, according to Girovagate.com, one of Italy’s largest travel blogs.
“Those like us who are constantly on the lookout for authentic Greece should note this name: Lipsi,” reads the article, published on Friday. The small island, he says, will leave you “speechless for its wild beaches and clear sea”, adding that the island is well known for its cuisine and sea excursions.
Girovagate.com also listed Aspronissi, which has one of the best beaches in all of Greece, as one of its recommendations for tourists to visit in Lipsi.
What you need to know about Lipsi, Greece
There is no direct daily ferry or plane connection to the island via mainland Greece, so options to get there would include a ferry trip from other Dodecanese islands. The following Greek islands offer connections to get to this paradise island:
Lipsi is not just an island, but actually a group of islets located in the southeastern Aegean Sea. The collective name comes from the largest island of all, Lipsi, which is formed of landmasses connected by a narrow isthmus.
Low hills and valleys, as well as a rocky coast and several bays, are part of the landscape of Lipsi.
Cars and roads are not common on the island; so most of the action takes place along the pedestrianized waterfront promenade. A small fishing port and several must-visit tavernas are also found.
In the town of Chorio, you can taste the island’s famous octopus dishes in one of the many ouzeries or fish restaurants there. At night, these places turn into hangouts where people can go for a drink and listen to live music.
Being a small island, it is quite easy to get around by bike or even on foot on Lipsi. Despite its size, however, there are many churches and monasteries on the island. The inhabitants even say that it is possible that each family of Lipsi has its own chapel.
Sights on the Greek island of Lipsi
Koimisis tis Theokou, an austere Byzantine church dating from the 7th or 8th century AD, houses an icon of the Virgin Mary holding a crucified Jesus. The church sits on the bay overlooking the harbour, surrounded by lush landscaping with natural springs.
The Lipsi Archaeological Collection in the main village features clay artefacts and ancient inscriptions from the Classical, Hellenistic and Christian periods.
Most of Lipsi’s beaches are close to the port. Those further away, however, are still close and fairly easy to reach by taxi or motorbike.
One of the most beautiful sandy beaches on the island, Kampos — with clear, shallow waters, plenty of natural shade, and quiet serenity — is ideal for families with children.
Platis Gialos, although one of the better known beaches, is not as crowded as you might expect. Here it is easy to spot wild ducks frolicking in the sea. The church of Agios Konstantinos, just behind the beach, although not always open, is one of the most beautiful places on the island.
Another must-see is Hoxlakoura, one of the largest beaches in Lipsi, with its white pebbles and crystal clear water, which is popular with adults and young people alike.
