We’ll just say it: if you haven’t been to Hamilton, you’re missing out on one of Montana’s finest gems. This small town of around 4,700 has serious charm, plenty of attractions and happens to be a gateway to an abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities. Best of all, it’s so easy to drive from and around Missoula that you could easily make a day trip out of it.
It’s been a while since you considered visiting Hamilton? We are going to give you some good reasons to go there.
In these uncertain times, please keep safety in mind and consider adding destinations to your bucket list at a later date.
Hamilton is located in Ravalli County, approximately a 55 minute drive from Missoula via US-93.
It’s also a fairly easy day trip destination if you live in Butte or Anaconda, although you should leave a bit earlier in the morning.
Hamilton was named after James Hamilton, an employee of Daly who mapped the town along the route of the Northern Pacific Railway in 1890.
While the town revolved around the great Anaconda copper mine and the Bitter Root Stock farm, nowadays life here is much quieter.
Visiting Daly Manor is a rite of passage when visiting Hamilton.
Marcus Daly, also known as the Copper King, was a wealthy Irish immigrant who bought the house for his family’s summer residence in 1886. The immaculately preserved mansion has over 50 gorgeous rooms.
If you are a history buff, you will also want to visit the Ravalli County Museum and Historical Society.
The museum is open five days a week (closed Sundays and Mondays) and exhibits tell the stories of Hamilton’s birth.
For a small town, there are quite a few excellent dining options here.
But it’s hard to top the legendary Naps Grill.
Naps Grill has been serving delicious burgers to the community for nearly three decades.
The burgers consistently win awards and have even been named to a “50 Best Burgers in the Nation” list. And they really live up to the hype.
Shed Horn Cellars 406 is located on West Main Street, and it’s a must if you love wine.
Our state isn’t exactly known for its vineyards, but rest assured, this tasting room is 100% Montana.
Owners Mike and Adawn Wood source their grapes in Napa.
Mike is a professional winemaker and he creates great wines.
If you’re more of a beer lover, check out Bitter Root Brewing, the latest best beer.
They produce 35-40 unique beers every year, and they’re all made here.
Even if you’re not a big beer fan, you should try some here.
Montana’s craft breweries are second to none, and this one is no exception.
Before heading home, be sure to stop and experience beautiful Lake Como.
It’s the jewel of the Bitterroot Valley, and the backdrop is breathtaking.
So… have you been to Hamilton lately? What is your favorite activity in this fun little town?
